Da Yun (大运) means "big luck" and it is usually translated as luck pillar or luck cycle. Your birth chart has four pillars that never change. The Da Yun is a fifth pillar that rotates on a ten-year schedule, so a full life passes through a sequence of these cycles, each one carrying its own stem and branch. When practitioners say someone is "in a good ten years" or "walking through a hard decade", the Da Yun is what they are talking about. It does not replace your chart. It sits next to it and shifts the balance, the way weather sits next to a landscape.
This is the part almost nobody can do by hand, and it is the reason "da yun starting age" is such a common search. The traditional method counts the days between your birth moment and the nearest solar term boundary, in a direction set by your chart, and converts that count into years at a rate of three days per year. That is why one person's cycles begin at age 3 and another's at age 8, and why two people born in the same week can change decades in different years. The calculator does this count from the exact solar term times, so the starting age you see is derived from your actual birth data rather than a rounded guess.
The sequence of your luck pillars is read off the sixty-pillar cycle starting from your month pillar, and it can run in either direction. Which direction you get depends on the polarity of your birth year combined with your gender, following the classical Zi Ping rule. Forward charts walk into the pillars that come after the birth month; backward charts walk into the pillars that came before it. The direction changes the entire order of your decades, which is another reason a hand calculation goes wrong so easily. The calculator applies the rule for you and lists the cycles in the correct order with the age range for each one.
A new luck pillar brings a new stem and branch into contact with your chart for roughly ten years. In practice this shifts three things. First, the element balance: a cycle can feed an element your chart is short of, or pile more weight onto one it already has too much of. Second, the relations: the incoming branch can combine or clash with branches in your birth chart, which traditional practice reads as periods where certain life areas ask for more attention. Third, the stage: each cycle also carries one of the twelve life stages, which describes the general texture of the decade. None of this is a prediction of events. A Da Yun is read as an indication of conditions, like knowing the season you are planting in.
